Research Assistant Scams

Research Assistant ScamsCraigslist Writer / Research Assistant ScamsCraigslist is notorious for job scams. There are many different types ofemployment-related scams on Craigslistincluding jobs that dont exist, listings that ask for confidential personal information or ask you to wire money or to pay for a background or credit check. One common version of these Craigslist scams is aimed at writers and research assistants. Types of Writer and Research Assistant Scams One Craigslist scam involves asking for writing with no intention of hiring or paying. This scam doesnt go after your money. Rather, its designed to collect writing to be used for publication without payment to the researcher or writer. These jobs are listed as freelance writer or research assistant jobs. The applicant is asked to submit writing samples for review. After the first set of samples are accepted, the candidate is asked to submit longer (600 words or more) documents as part of the application process on a v ery specific topic. The person isnt hired, but the scammer now has content to publish. In a variation of this scam, the writer is hired, submits writing or reviews to the poster, but is never paid. Readers have posted scam warnings saying things like I am a writer. I got some work from mlucuscogmail.com. He agreed to pay me through PayPal. I have written nearly 50,000 words for his project. When I ask payment he started harassing me, and he used very rude language. He owes me and my team more than $1000. He calls himself James and said that he was from the U.S. He actually does not have any clients and has a blog of his own. He has claimed that he hails from different countries across many freelancing websites. Writers, please beware of him. After my first short sample, he wanted a 600-word sample to see if I was suitable but this was on a specific topic with very specific criteria. After submitting some writing samples, I was offered the job, and assigned a project immediately. Aft er 3 weeks had passed, I was told payment had been sent. I foolishly waited for payment to arrive. I contacted them again, via email, and was contacted by said, Alex Flores who told me that payment would be sent immediately. Despite what I was told, I have not received a single payment. I have been doing products reviews for the past 4 months for them. They have hundreds of assignments available for writers to do so many of us take the opportunity to capitalize on them doing as much as we can. I have nearly 150 reviews that I did belastung month that are still pending and what they are now doing is to accept them one by one, without paying me Scam Warning Signs One of the signs that often indicates the listing is a scam is a lack of company or personal information. This basic information may not ever be provided to you, even after email correspondence, a phone call, or a Skype conversation. The lack of information makes it very difficult to determine if a listing is a legitimate opportunity or a scam. If an employer wont give you a business or individual name, full contact information (address, phone, website) so you can check to be sure the listing is legitimate, you need to be careful, and you should probably not pursue the ad. Another warning sign is when, after sending the first sample, the applicant is asked for more, lengthier documents. Some legitimate freelance writing positions require applicants to write a sample or two, but if youre asked for more, you should investigate before agreeing to write any more. How to Avoid these Scams Be concerned if the contact person wont disclose company or personal contact informationBe suspicious of email that looks unprofessionalCheck out the information in the postingAsk where the writing will be publishedAsk for references(other writers and researchers who have worked for the poster)Dont submit original writing samplesGet payment terms ahead of time and set a short-cycle payment scheduleWatch out for paym ents that are wired(it may be a wire fraud scam) More Information on Job Scams How to Avoid ScamsPhony writing jobs are not the only scams out there. The Competition Has an Elevator Speech Do You

The Competition Has an Elevator Speech Do You The Competition Has an Elevator Speech Do You A WorkSphere survey released in September by Spherion Staffing Services reveals that, for the most part, employees can articulate what they do for a living in 30 seconds or less. Eighty-nine percent of employees feel confident in their ability to give an elevator speech, which suggeststhat a large portion of the workforce is equipped with the right tools to win the next job, promotion, raise, or company award.Hiring managers have long lauded the elevator speech as the ticket to career advancement. Given that the majority of workers are able to eloquently describe their jobs in elevator pitches, how do individuals make their speechesstand out from the crowd? And for job seekers who dont have an elevator speech at the ready, what are the right (and most important) things to highlight in the short span of the elevator speech?Titles Are ToughOne stumbling block many people experience while att empting to streamline their speech is their job title. More than a quarter (27 percent) of employees think that their job title misrepresents their role at work, and 24 percent say job titles impact their job satisfaction. Its important for a title to be reflective of the job the employee is responsible for, says Spherion President Sandy Mazur. When job titles are representative of the role of the titleholder, the employee is mora likely to be aware of where they fit in the overall picture of the company and compared to their peers in the industry.Quick Tips for a Better Elevator SpeechCoupled with a well-fitting job title, the following specific techniques canmake one elevator pitch more engaging than the next, according to MazurBegin by leaving your audience wanting more By saying something they dont expect, you will make them want to listen to what you have to say.Dont be formulaic Being unpredictable and exciting can better showcase your personality and increase the likelihood of a future conversation.Talk with them, not at them In general, people are more open to dialogue than lectures. Even if that means you dont get to every point in your speech, giving the other person room to ask a question or two ultimately makes the exchange more unique and memorable.Read your audience If the person you are talking to isnt into the conversation or seems disinterested, dont force it.Rehearse, but dont sound rehearsed The Spherion survey found that more than a fifth (21 percent) of employees find it challenging to explain what they do for a living. So, its important to know what you want to say and practice saying it, but when its time to deliver your elevator speech, repeating a memorized speech filled with jargon wont stand out.The anatomy of a successful speech starts with a clean slate.Because a typical elevator speech is about 30 seconds or less, its important to map out the essential information to describe who you are in the beginning of the process, says Mazur. Start with a blank piece of paper and outline everything you would want say if you had an unlimited amount of time. From there, you can start to edit your speech, eliminating any impertinent or unnecessary information until you have a clear, compact, 30-second speech. Remaining positive and excluding boring details provides fertile ground for a successful elevator speech.

5 Ways to Use Humor in a Job Interview

5 Ways to Use Humor in a Job Interview5 Ways to Use Humor in a Job InterviewStop us if youve heard this one a guy walks into a barWhile this may be a fantastic way to break the ice with your most recent online date or a tale to regale your college friends over a few beers, using humor during a job interview is a far mora delicate operation. Laughing at yourself is a great piece of advice to teach much-needed humility in life, but trading quips while interviewing for the job of your dreams is a different matter altogether. Humor can be both a tool for breaking the ice during your interview but, when used inappropriately, could also potentially hurt your chances at getting that follow up or job offer. So just how do you navigate the comic waters during this all-important hiring process? Weve got a few suggestions to help you out.Read the RoomFirst and foremost, learn to read the personality, mood and body language of the person conducting your interviewer. If your potential employer st arts the meeting off by trading quips or cracking jokes, feel free to follow suit in an appropriate and approachable manner. If on the other hand, its all business in the demeanor front, you may want to hold back on those jokes. Humor isnt a Job SkillUnless youre applying for an opening at the local clown academy, humor should be used as a tool to open up a dialog and inject levity into your interview rather than the main substance of your personality. Pepper in a smile, laugh or occasional funny reference rather than turning your entire meeting into a Rodney Dangerfield sketch. This will help enrich your personality in the eyes of your interviewer, rather than making you seem unprofessional or that youre elend taking the job prospect seriously. Mind Your Humor MannersWhen injecting a little bit of fun and games into your conversational skills, be sure to keep topics light and approachable and steer clear of anything controversial or political. While we all love the late night stan d up comedians ability to skewer the politician, priest or lawyer, its harder to identify your interviewers political leanings to ensure you dont offend with a misplaced quip. Focus on general topics or relatable scenarios, like that time your kid stuck that sucker in your dogs fur or wifes fur coat. This Isnt Stand-UpRemember that while humor is a useful tool in an interview, job applicants should strive for approachable rather than come prepared with a sketch worthy of Saturday Night Live. A warm smile or an understanding laugh can help you seem engaged while still serious about the potential position. This combination of traits will appeal to the person conducting the interviewer and will allow the dialog to flow mora smoothly when you get down to serious business of qualifications and the like. Timing is EverythingSpeaking of qualifications, remember that the real purpose of your job interview is to sell yourself as the perfect candidate for the job. Finding ways to use humor to do this while still discussing or otherwise working in your prior experience creates a happy medium of approachability and qualification for the task at hand. Self-deprecating remarks that are light in nature but reference your prior experience are the perfect way to break the ice and get the conversation flowing in the right direction. After all, you may enjoy an hour-long conversation where you and your interviewer exchange chuckles, but that still wont land you the gig without solid qualifications. The Bottom Line on HumorUsing humor in an interview takes a deft hand and balanced approach. With the push and pull between professionalism and approachability, potential candidates may want to tread with caution before cracking jokes in the meeting room. When used correctly, however, humor is an essential element in establishing likability and can even indicate that a candidate has the essential analytical skills necessary to relate disparate events, whether for a laugh or professiona l reason. Establish the perfect balance and youll be well on your way to humor induced, interview success. Laughter is, after all, the thing that makes the world go round.
